December 2026 – January 2027 · Events

Christmas lights, NYE fireworks and the holiday crowds.

Macau does the festive season in its own way: Light Up Macao runs right through Christmas and New Year, the Cotai Strip closes the year with fireworks off the Parisian's Eiffel Tower, and the crowds on 31 December are some of the biggest of the year. Here is what is confirmed, what usually happens, and the one piece of advice that matters most: plan your exit.

What is confirmed

The December holidays are fixed: the 8th (Feast of the Immaculate Conception), the 20th (SAR Establishment Day), the 22nd (Winter Solstice) and the 24th–25th (Christmas). And Light Up Macao runs from 5 December to 10 January, so the light installations are up on both Christmas and New Year's Eve. That much is official.

What usually happens on New Year's Eve

This describes last year's event, not this year's: no resort has announced its 2026 programme yet. On New Year's Eve 2025, the countdown centred on The Parisian's Eiffel Tower replica on the Cotai Strip: fireworks shortly after midnight, a sound-and-light show on the tower, and a live band and DJ at Le Jardin. Sands Resorts ran live music and countdown celebrations across the Strip. The Parisian's Eiffel Tower also doubles as a giant Christmas tree through the festive season, with a light show every 15 minutes. Expect the same shape this year, but wait for the late-November announcements before booking anything around a specific party.

Plan your exit

This is the most useful paragraph in the guide. After last year's fireworks, the crowds overwhelmed Cotai transport: long delays at bus stops, light-rail stations and taxi queues, with 760,363 cross-border movements recorded on 31 December and more than 180,000 inbound visitors. If you are out on the Strip at midnight, decide in advance how you get home: book a hotel on the side of the water you plan to sleep on, arrange a private transfer before midnight, or be prepared to wait. The light rail and the casino shuttles absorb some of it, but not all of it, and not quickly.

Staying on the Strip for the countdown puts the fireworks on your doorstep:

Christmas itself

Christmas Day in Macau is quieter than New Year's Eve: a public holiday, families out, the big hotels running their Christmas dinners and buffets. The Light Up Macao installations are on as usual in the evening. If you are here for Christmas rather than the countdown, it is a pleasant, low-key two days; the crowds arrive for the 31st.
