Lead-in
Mid-Autumn weekend ran smoothly: 415k visitors, queues orderly.

01

Gongbei (Border Gate)

06:00–01:00 dailyBusiest crossing~320k/day forecast

The big one. Gongbei sits at the top of the peninsula, a short walk from the main hotel and casino cluster, so it handles the most traffic by far: around 320,000 crossings a day forecast for Golden Week. It is also the only major crossing that closes overnight (01:00 to 06:00). Expect the longest queues here, especially on 3–4 October. Police will open extra manual counters and automated channels at peak times, and will redirect passenger flow between crossings when one gets overloaded.

02

Hengqin

24 hours dailyOne-stop clearance~75k/day forecast

The smart alternative if you are staying on Cotai or Coloane. Hengqin runs 24 hours with joint inspection and one-stop clearance, so you queue once for both sides. Forecast at around 75,000 crossings a day, a fraction of Gongbei's load. It connects directly to the Macau LRT Hengqin line, which puts you on the Cotai Strip in minutes. If your hotel is in Cotai, cross here.

03

Qingmao

24 hours dailyBuilt to relieve Gongbei~104k/day forecast

Qingmao was built specifically to take pressure off Gongbei, and it shows: 24-hour operation, purpose-built for high throughput, forecast at around 104,000 crossings a day. The Macau-side entrance is in the Ilha Verde neighbourhood on the peninsula. A solid pick when the Border Gate queues snake out of the hall.

04

Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge port

24 hours dailyHK arrivals + vehicles~81k/day forecast

The bridge port on the artificial island clears passengers and vehicles 24 hours. If you are coming from Hong Kong, the HZMB shuttle bus runs around the clock (about 40 minutes, HK$65 day / $70 night) and you clear immigration at the port. Forecast at around 81,000 crossings a day. Vehicle traffic here is expected to be the heaviest of any crossing, so drivers should allow extra time on 3 October, forecast as the peak day for cross-border vehicles.

Ferry terminals (Outer Harbour, Taipa) and the airport also clear passengers, but the four crossings above handle the Golden Week bulk.

Timing

When the crush hits

3 and 4 October are the days to worry about: police forecast daily crossings could exceed 800,000 on the peak days, against a holiday average of 740,000–770,000. Cross-border vehicle traffic is expected to peak on 3 October.

Direction matters as much as the day. Last year's pattern: the outbound crush (leaving Macau) hit the evening of 30 September and the morning of 1 October, while the inbound wave (arriving) peaked on the evening of 7 October. Plan around those windows if you can.

One reassuring data point: the Mid-Autumn weekend just gone (25–27 September) saw 415,000 visitors, up 19.5% on last year, with 2.1 million crossings, and police reported clearance stayed orderly throughout. The system can handle the load; it is the peaks that bite.

Strategy

How to beat the queues

Pick the quieter crossing. If Gongbei is your default, reconsider: Hengqin or Qingmao for Zhuhai arrivals, the bridge port for Hong Kong. All three run 24 hours.

Travel off-peak. Early morning and late evening are lighter everywhere. The 24-hour crossings make this easy; Gongbei closes at 01:00, so don't cut it fine.

Use the automated channels. Police are opening extra manual counters and automated clearance lanes during busy periods. If you are eligible for self-service clearance, it is meaningfully faster than the manual queues.

Check before you go. Macau police publish real-time border flow updates during the holiday and coordinate live with the Zhuhai and Hong Kong crossings. A two-minute check before setting out can save an hour in a hall.

Allow a buffer on 3–4 October. Whatever your crossing, treat the two peak days as unpredictable and build in slack. Ferries, hotel check-ins and dinner reservations do not wait.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which Macau border crossing is fastest during Golden Week?

Gongbei (Border Gate) handles the most traffic and queues the longest, with around 320,000 crossings a day forecast. Hengqin and Qingmao are usually lighter and both run 24 hours, so they are the better bet when Gongbei is packed. All four crossings get busy on 3–4 October.

What are the Macau border opening hours?

Gongbei (Border Gate): 06:00 to 01:00 daily. Hengqin, Qingmao and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge port: 24 hours daily.

When is the worst time to cross the border?

3 and 4 October are forecast as the peak days, with single-day crossings possibly above 800,000. Direction matters too: last year the outbound crush hit the evening of 30 September and the morning of 1 October, while inbound traffic peaked on the evening of 7 October.

Can I cross into Macau late at night?

Yes. Hengqin, Qingmao and the HZMB bridge port all clear passengers 24 hours a day. Gongbei closes at 01:00. The HZMB shuttle bus from Hong Kong also runs 24 hours.

How do I check current border wait times?

Macau police publish real-time border flow updates during the holiday and coordinate live with the Zhuhai and Hong Kong crossings. Check the latest flow information before you set out, and allow extra time on 3–4 October.
