Coloane · Day trip

Coloane, the slow side of Macau.

Everything the peninsula is not: a fishing village, two beaches, a 19.99-metre marble goddess on a hilltop, Portugal's most famous restaurant in Macau, and the only real hiking in the city. Half a day if you are quick, a full day if you do it properly.

A-Ma Cultural Village and the statue

19.99m marble statueFree entryTin Hau Palace 8am–6pm

The headline stop. The Mazu statue stands 19.99 metres tall, carved from 120 pieces of white marble to symbolise Macau's 1999 handover, inaugurated in October 1998 and described as the world's tallest marble Mazu statue. Around it sits a ~7,000 sqm hillside religious complex with the Tin Hau Palace (government visitor info lists daily 8am–6pm; confirm on arrival as listings vary). Do not confuse it with the historic A-Ma Temple on the peninsula: this is a separate place, on Estrada do Alto de Coloane above the Ka Ho side.

Getting up the hill: buses 15, 21A, 25, 26, 26A, 50 and N3 serve Seac Pai Van at the foot. From there it is a 20–30 minute walk up (fairly steep), or a taxi all the way up. A free shuttle from the lower car park is reported by some sources and reported as suspended by others: do not count on it. Taxis at the top can be scarce, especially on weekends, so have a bus route home in mind.

Coloane Village

Free to wanderLord Stow's original bakeryBuses 25 · 26

The quiet pastel fishing village on Coloane's southwest coast, narrow lanes with mosaic paving, facing the channel to Hengqin. The Chapel of St. Francis Xavier (1928, pale yellow walls, listings give 09:30–17:30) sits on Eduardo Marques Square; the Tam Kung Temple, completed 1862, holds a whale-bone dragon boat at its main altar and celebrates the Lord Tam Festival on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month. The original Lord Stow's bakery at 1 Rua do Tassara (the 1989 Portuguese egg tart shop) is here; hours vary across sources, so go in the morning and expect the tarts to sell out in the afternoon. Just north of the village, the Lai Chi Vun shipyards (lots X11–X15) reopened in June 2023 as a free heritage attraction with a daily 10am–6pm exhibition.

Hac Sa Beach and Fernando's

Black sandFernando's 12:00–21:30Buses 21A · 26A · 15T

Macau's largest natural beach, famous for its black sand, at Coloane's southern end: lifeguards in season, toilets, changing rooms, showers, a BBQ park and a public swimming pool at the beach sports complex. The water is murky rather than clear; weekday mornings are the quietest, and there is almost no shade.

Fernando's at 9 Praia de Hac Sa has been the classic Portuguese restaurant on this beach since 1986: clams, grilled chicken, codfish, suckling pig, homemade sangria, alfresco garden seating. Daily 12:00–21:30, no reservations, usually packed, so arrive early. Payment methods vary by report, so carry cash (MOP or HKD; several Coloane spots are cash-only).

Easy walk from the beach: the Long Chao Kok coastal trail, 1.2 km one-way along the rocky headland from the south end of Hac Sa, flat and with strong coastal views.

04

Cheoc Van Beach

Smaller, calmer covePool May–Oct, 8am–8pmBus 26A

The quieter of Macau's two beaches, a smaller golden-sand cove backed by forest on Coloane's west side, about 1.5 km down Estrada de Cheoc Van from the village. Toilets, changing rooms, a snack bar and seaside restaurants; the ~400 sqm public swimming pool opens 8am–8pm from May through October (entry reported around MOP 15 in visitor reviews, not officially published). Reach it on bus 26A and descend the long staircase from the stop. Ristorante La Gondola and the Pousada de Coloane restaurant sit on the beachfront.

05

Hiking trails

Coloane Trail 8.1 km2–2.5 hoursBest Oct–May

The only real hiking in Macau. The Coloane Trail is the main event: an 8.1 km moderate loop around the central hillside, about 2–2.5 hours, partly paved, partly rugged, accessible from the road up to the A-Ma Cultural Village. Shorter options: the Coloane North-East trail network (2,680m, 810m and 800m routes), the Hac Sa reservoir family walk (2.65 km) and fitness walk (1.5 km), and a 1,225m gentle fitness walk loop. October to May is the hiking season; in summer avoid midday heat and carry water, as most trails have no facilities.

Getting there

The buses, in one place

From the peninsula: 25 (Border Gate, circular) and 26 (Patane, circular) go to Coloane Village; 26A (Patane to Hac Sa Beach, 06:00–00:30) covers the beach end. From Cotai: bus 26 reaches Coloane Village in about 13 minutes, and 26/26A reaches Hac Sa and Cheoc Van in about 20–23 minutes. Fares are typically MOP 6 a ride. The trip from Taipa Ferry Terminal to Coloane Village is around 43 minutes on bus 26, so plan your ferry and bus connection together.

Taxis are straightforward when you can find one (rough estimates: MOP 55–80 Cotai to Coloane, MOP 120+ from the peninsula; the meter starts at MOP 21 for the first 1,600m). They can be scarce at the A-Ma Cultural Village and on weekend beach days; restaurants will call one if asked. Public buses are the reliable fallback.

Itinerary

Half day or full day

Half day: start at Coloane Village (chapel, Tam Kung Temple, Lord Stow's egg tarts), lunch at Fernando's, then the afternoon at Hac Sa Beach with the Long Chao Kok coastal walk. That is the classic, and it works.

Full day: add the A-Ma Cultural Village and the statue in the morning, the Coloane Trail loop mid-morning, lunch at Fernando's or Espaço Lisboa in the village (Rua das Gaivotas; African chicken, duck rice), and Cheoc Van Beach in the afternoon. Finish at the Lai Chi Vun shipyards if a market or event is on; the 19th A-Ma Cultural and Tourism Festival opens at the village site on 13 October 2026.

Beach season runs May–October; hiking season October–May. A full-day trip in October gets both. Weekend mornings at Lord Stow's and lunchtime at Fernando's are the two pressure points: go early to both.
