Macau indoors

Rainy day Macau, done properly.

Macau rain is not drizzle. When a wet day lands, the amateur move is to zigzag between the peninsula and Cotai and get soaked at every crossing. The local move is a circuit: museums on the peninsula in the morning while the old town is quiet, one single crossing around midday, the big indoor attractions of Cotai in the afternoon, and a show at night. Here it is, with the closure days that catch everyone out.

The one rule

Pick a side, cross once

Macau is two landmasses with bridges between them, and rain turns every bridge crossing into a small expedition. So the circuit is built on geography, not on a ranked list of attractions. Morning belongs to the peninsula, where the museums are. Early afternoon belongs to Cotai, where the resorts swallow whole afternoons indoors. In between, you cross exactly once, ideally door to door: a resort shuttle, a taxi, or the light rail from Barra station.

The second rule is about the calendar, because Macau's indoor venues take it in turns to close. The Macao Museum rests on Mondays, the Grand Prix and Maritime museums on Tuesdays, teamLab on Wednesdays, the Science Center on Thursdays, and the big show is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. Any wet day has a workable circuit; you just pick the cluster that is open. There is a day-by-day version at the end of this page.

Peninsula · morning

Start inside the fortress: the Macao Museum

The Macao Museum is built into Mount Fortress, up the escalators beside the Ruins of St. Paul's, and it is the best single hour or two you can spend indoors on the peninsula. Three floors run from the first Chinese and Portuguese settlements through the trading centuries to the modern city: recreated streets, a fishing boat, furniture, ceramics, and the small everyday objects that explain how this place actually worked. The fortress garden on top is a fair-weather extra; on a wet day, skip it without regret.

Practicalities. Open 10am to 6pm, last entry 5:30pm, closed on Mondays (public holidays excepted). Adults pay MOP 15, student card holders MOP 8, and entry is free for Macao residents, children 12 and under and seniors 65 and over. Everyone gets in free on Tuesdays and on the 15th of each month, which makes a wet Tuesday the cheapest museum morning in town. Around it, the Historic Centre is full of interiors to duck between: St. Dominic's Church and the Leal Senado building both sit within a few covered-arcade minutes of the museum.

Peninsula · morning

The Barra cluster: ships, a temple and a mansion

If the rain starts early and you are based on the south side, stay in Barra and do not move. The Maritime Museum stands on Barra Square beside A-Ma Temple, shaped like a ship and filled with the story of Macau and the sea: fishing fleets, the age of sail, ship models, navigation instruments and an aquarium gallery at the end. Entry is free, hours are 10am to 6pm with last entry at 5:30pm, and it is closed on Tuesdays. Allow an hour.

Within a short walk, A-Ma Temple gives you the covered pavilions and incense coils version of the morning, and Mandarin's House, the 60-room 19th-century mansion, is free and opens 10am to 6pm, closed Wednesdays, no entry after 5:30pm. Three interiors, one neighbourhood, almost no time spent in the rain between them.

Peninsula · morning, with kids or petrolheads

The harbour side pair: Grand Prix Museum and Science Center

On the outer harbour side of the peninsula, two big indoor venues sit a few minutes apart, and either can carry a whole morning. The Macao Grand Prix Museum, in the Tourism Activities Centre at 431 Rua de Luís Gonzaga Gomes, tells the story of the street race running since 1954: winning cars and motorcycles, waxwork drivers, simulators and VR experiences, spread over four floors. Budget two hours, three if the simulators grab you. Open 10am to 6pm, last entry 5:30pm, closed on Tuesdays; MOP 80 standard, MOP 40 concession.

Down the waterfront, the Macao Science Center is the silver cone designed by I. M. Pei, next to the Kun Iam statue. Fourteen galleries of hands-on exhibits, built for children but genuinely fun for adults, plus a planetarium with one of the sharpest dome projection systems anywhere. Open 10am to 6pm, ticket sales stop at 5:30pm, closed on Thursdays and on Lunar New Year's Eve. The exhibition centre costs MOP 50 for adults; planetarium shows are MOP 60 in 2D and MOP 80 in 3D, with concession rates for under 18s and over 65s, and under 2s free. If you are travelling as a family, this pair is the morning: see our family guide for how to pace it with small children.

The crossing

Lunch, then one trip over the water

Around midday, make the single move to Cotai and stay there. The resorts run free shuttle buses from the ferry terminals and the border gate straight into their lobbies, taxis do the trip cheaply, and the light rail crosses from Barra. Once you are inside a Cotai resort you are in a small indoor city: eat lunch in the mall, take your time, and let the afternoon rain do its worst outside. Our dining guide covers where to eat inside the big resorts, and practical covers the shuttle and rail details.

Cotai · afternoon

teamLab SuperNature: the afternoon disappears

teamLab SuperNature Macao, on the third floor of The Venetian at Cotai Expo Hall F, is 5,000 square metres of interactive digital art: rooms of falling flowers, a floating flower garden, light sculptures and spaces that react to where you stand and what you touch. It is the rare attraction that suits rain emotionally as well as practically; the whole thing is dark, immersive and weatherproof, and two hours vanish inside it.

Practicalities. Open 11am to 7pm, last entry at 6:15pm, closed on Wednesdays, with occasional extra maintenance closures, so check your date before you cross town for it. Tickets are MOP 288 for ages 13 and over and MOP 208 for children 3 to 12; under 3s go free, and under 13s must be with an adult. Wear flat shoes: heels and flip-flops are not allowed, some floors are mirrored, and a few areas can leave you slightly wet, which on a rainy day feels only fair. Weekends and holidays fill up, so book ahead then.

Either side of teamLab, the Venetian's Grand Canal Shoppes are the classic rain filler: canals, painted skies and street performers under a roof, free to wander until 11pm. Between teamLab's 7pm close and the evening show, this is where the circuit breathes.

Cotai · evening

House of Dancing Water, and the dark night plan B

The night belongs to House of Dancing Water at City of Dreams, a few minutes from the Venetian. The reimagined production plays out over a stage pool holding some 17 million litres of water: high dives, aerial acrobatics, a ship that rises from the depths, and a love story threaded through it. It runs about 90 minutes with no intermission, so eat before, not after.

In the current season the show performs Wednesday to Sunday, at 4:30pm and 7:30pm on most dates, and the theatre is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. Box office seats run from MOP 698 in the Gallery up to MOP 1,598 in the Golden Circle; the front rows of each section are the splash zone and come with waterproof gear. The 7:30pm seats go first, so this is the one booking on the circuit to make early.

On a dark night, or with the show sold out, the fallback is a slow one: Galaxy Macau's Diamond and Crystal Lobby shows run indoors through the evening for free, dinner in the resort can stretch as long as you like, and the spa floors of the big hotels take walk-ins for evening treatments. Our free things guide has the lobby show times, and macaumassage.com covers the spa side properly.

By weekday

The circuit, day by day

Monday. The Macao Museum is closed and the show is dark, so run the harbour side pair in the morning (Grand Prix Museum, Science Center), teamLab in the afternoon, and a lobby shows and dinner evening in Cotai.

Tuesday. The Grand Prix and Maritime museums are closed and the show is dark, but the Macao Museum is free for everyone on Tuesdays: fortress museum in the morning, teamLab in the afternoon, free evening in the resorts.

Wednesday. teamLab is closed and so is Mandarin's House. Take the Barra cluster in the morning, the Science Center or Grand Prix Museum after lunch on your way across, and House of Dancing Water at 7:30pm.

Thursday. The Science Center is closed. Everything else is open: old town museum morning, teamLab afternoon, show at night. The full circuit, as drawn.

Friday to Sunday. Everything is open, and everything is busier. Book teamLab and the show ahead, start at the Macao Museum at 10am before the tour groups land, and the weekend version runs itself.

For what else is on while you are here, check events, and if the sky clears by evening, our attractions guide has the outdoor list waiting.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which Macau museums close on which days?

The Macao Museum closes on Mondays. The Grand Prix Museum and the Maritime Museum close on Tuesdays. teamLab SuperNature Macao closes on Wednesdays. The Macao Science Center closes on Thursdays. House of Dancing Water is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. There is a workable circuit on every day of the week if you pick the right cluster.

Do I need to book the rainy day circuit in advance?

The museums are walk-in. The two things worth booking ahead are teamLab SuperNature Macao on weekends and holidays, when entry slots fill, and House of Dancing Water, where the good seats for the 7:30pm show go first. Everything else on this circuit can be decided on the day, watching the sky.

Can children do this circuit?

Yes, and two stops are built for them: the Macao Science Center, with 14 hands-on galleries and a planetarium, and teamLab, where children under 3 enter free and under 13s must be with an adult. teamLab has mirrored floors and some uneven, dimly lit areas, so flat shoes and a hand to hold are the plan.

What if it is a typhoon day, not just rain?

Then the circuit bends. When a high typhoon signal is up, venues can close at short notice and transport thins out, so check the venue and your route before leaving the hotel. On those days, stay in one resort or one neighbourhood, and treat anything that is open as a bonus.

How do I get from the peninsula to Cotai without getting soaked?

Door to door is the trick: the big resorts run free shuttle buses between the ferry terminals, the border and their Cotai properties, taxis are cheap and plentiful, and the light rail runs from Barra station on the peninsula across to Cotai. On a wet day, one crossing around midday is all this circuit asks of you.
