Two free countdown concerts, and an honest answer on fireworks.
Published 30 October 2026
Macau does New Year's Eve in the open air. The official night is built around two free countdown concerts organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC): the big one at Sai Van Lake Plaza on the peninsula, and a more family oriented show at the Taipa Houses. The format is confirmed; the 2026 lineup is not announced yet. Here is what is set, what is still to come, and the fireworks question answered straight.

What is confirmed
The shape of the night is set by the official format. The Macau Countdown Concert takes place at Sai Van Lake Plaza, running from 22:00 on 31 December to 00:10 on 1 January, so the music carries the crowd through midnight and just past it. The second stage is the Taipa Countdown Show at the Taipa Houses. Both concerts are organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), with MGTO, the Municipal Affairs Bureau and TDM among the co-organisers, and the big resort operators as joint organisers, as in the most recent edition. Admission to both is free.
What is not announced yet
Plainly: no lineup has been announced for 2026 yet, and that is normal for this event. The performers are announced only in late December. In the most recent edition, the programme was announced on 29 December, only days before the night itself. So if you are planning around a particular act, there is nothing to plan around yet. Book the trip on the format, the two venues and the city being lit, and check back in late December. This guide will be updated when the programme drops.
The main event: Sai Van Lake Plaza
The Macau Countdown Concert at Sai Van Lake Plaza is the centrepiece of the official night, on the waterfront on the Macau peninsula. It starts at 22:00, which makes the evening easy to structure: dinner first, then drift down to the plaza for the build up to midnight. The concert runs to 00:10, so the countdown itself happens inside the show rather than as a separate ceremony. It is a standing, outdoor, free event, so the practical advice is simple: arrive with time to spare, expect the area around the plaza to be busy well before the start, and wear something warm enough for two hours outside by the water.
The family option: the Taipa Houses
The Taipa Countdown Show, at the Taipa Houses, is the more family oriented of the two concerts. If you are staying on Taipa or in Cotai, or you are counting down with children, this is the natural pick: the setting is quieter, the crowd is more local and family based, and you avoid crossing to the peninsula and back at the busiest moment of the year. Admission is free, the same as the main concert. As with Sai Van, the 2026 performers for this stage have not been announced yet.
The fireworks question, answered honestly
Many visitors arrive expecting a government fireworks display over the harbour at midnight. Here is the straight answer: the government's countdown concerts carried no fireworks display in the most recent edition, and IC said so in advance. There is no standing government New Year's Eve fireworks display in Macau, so do not build your night around one, and be wary of any listing that promises one. What the night does offer on the resort side is different: the resorts on the Cotai Strip hold their own countdown parties, so if a dressed up indoor party is your plan, Cotai is where to look. And the sky is not empty of light: Light Up Macao is in the middle of its run on New Year's Eve, with the city lit nightly about 18:00 to 22:00, so an early evening walk through the installations works well before either concert.
Getting home afterwards
The main concert ends just after midnight, and parties across the city finish around the same time, so the trip back to your hotel is the one part of the night worth planning in advance. The simplest strategy is to choose your concert on the same side as your bed: Sai Van Lake Plaza if you are staying on the peninsula, the Taipa Houses if you are staying on Taipa or in Cotai. That turns getting home into a walk or a short hop instead of a cross harbour trip at peak crowd time. Expect the streets around both venues to be crowded right after the finish, taxis and buses to be in heavy demand, and journeys to take longer than the map suggests. If you are in a group, agree a meeting point away from the main crowd before the countdown, keep your hotel address handy, and do not rush the exit: the venues empty fast, but the crowd thins noticeably if you give it a little time.
Start the evening with a show before the countdown:
