Day trips, in and out of Macau.
Updated 29 September 2026
Macau is small enough that the whole territory is a day trip. These three are the ones worth your time.
01
Coloane: Macau's quiet side
Coloane is where Macau exhales. The southernmost island (now joined to Taipa by the Cotai reclamation) holds the territory's beaches and its sleepiest village. A different world from the casino floors twenty minutes north.
Hac Sa Beach ("black sand" in Cantonese) is Macau's largest natural beach, dark volcanic sand fringed with barbecue pits and a laid-back promenade. Next to it, Cheoc Van is smaller and calmer. Neither is a swimming paradise, but both are genuine local weekend spots.
Coloane Village is a grid of pastel lanes around the yellow Chapel of St. Francis Xavier. This is where you'll find the original Lord Stow's Bakery: the Portuguese egg tart that started Macau's obsession, still drawing queues. Eat one warm, standing up, like everyone else.
Walkers: the Coloane Trail loops the island's highest point through forest with sea views, an easy half-day walk.
02
Taipa Village: the food streets
Between the Cotai resorts and the old island, Taipa Village packs Macau's densest concentration of eating into a few walkable lanes. Rua do Cunha is the main artery: pork chop buns, almond cookies, durian ice cream, Portuguese restaurants spilling onto the pavement.
The mint-green Taipa Houses Museum (five colonial villas on the waterfront) shows how the island's Portuguese elite lived. The whitewashed Our Lady of Carmel church anchors the village square. Come late afternoon, eat into the evening.
Finish the evening with a show:
03
Hong Kong: the reverse day trip
Most people do Macau as the day trip from Hong Kong. Doing it the other way round works just as well: frequent ferries cross in about an hour, and a full Hong Kong day (Victoria Peak, Central's lanes, a harbour crossing) fits comfortably.
The practical notes: leave early, carry your passport, and expect immigration queues at peak times on both sides. Book your return sailing when you arrive, or in advance online. The last boats back fill up. Ferry details. Compare ferry deals on macaudeals.com.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is Coloane worth visiting?
Yes, it's Macau's quiet side: Hac Sa Beach, Coloane Village, the original Lord Stow's egg tarts and walking trails. Half a day is enough.
Can you do Hong Kong as a day trip from Macau?
Yes. Ferries run frequently and take about an hour. Leave early, expect immigration queues at peak times, and book your return sailing in advance.
What is Taipa Village known for?
Its food streets, especially Rua do Cunha, plus the pastel Taipa Houses Museum and Our Lady of Carmel church. Better late afternoon into evening.
